Starting my second guitar made of Madagascar Rosewood. Bending commenced today, thought I'd share some pics. The bending iron is a piece of aluminum tubing with a 200W Halogen bulb and a dimmer switch. The tough thing is keeping twists and flat spots out of the sides. I learned on my first that I could go back and "clean up" the little discrepancies after the main shape has been formed. There is a slight twist developing right where the tail block will reside. I've had this wood sitting around and its been calling my name ever since I bought the OLF SJ mold and plans!! Couldn't wait. My first guitar just needs a headstock inlay, finish, etc. I seem to like the building rather than the finishin details like frets, etc! ![]() ![]() Thanks for looking, Pete ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Pete, That is a great start. I like that bending iron, and it looks like it works just fine. What kind of top are you putting on it? Jeff |

Hi Jeff, The top will be Sitka spruce, I think. I have some laying around, but maybe will try a different type of Spruce. Pete |

Pete, looks great so far! How about a pic of the back that goes with those sides? Mind if I ask where you got the MadRose? |

Dave - I bought the Mad Rose from Allied Lutherie, nice looking wood, much heavier than the Walnut I used for my first guitar; beautiful stuff ![]() Peter - Yeah, that is a John Hall mold, with plans from Michael ![]() Don - Thanks! I will really try to photo-document this build and post as many pics as I can. I was well into build number one before I found this forum, so don't have many assembly pics. I really fell in love with the SJ shape and cannot wait to see and play the finished product!!!! Pete ![]() |

Thanks, Hesh. I think Mad Rose is my favorite wood. I have a Froggy Bottom made from it and it is spectacular! I seem to like the woods similar to Mad Rose, Ziricote, etc, that have not necessarily "wild" figure, but maybe the 1-3 inch wide "lines". Hard to describe, know it when I see it. Pete |

Looks really good Pete. That zoot is mighty fine looking. Should be a dandy for sure! Have you thought about some bearclaw sitka spruce for the top? |
